The best time to visit North Sikkim is from March to June (spring/summer) and October to December (autumn/winter). April-May offers blooming flowers in Yumthang Valley, while October-December provides clear skies. Monsoon (July-September) brings landslides and winter (Jan-Feb) heavy snowfall making roads inaccessible.
YES. All visitors (Indian and foreigners) require Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit North Sikkim. We arrange these permits in advance. You need to provide passport-sized photographs and valid photo ID proof (Aadhar card for Indians, passport for foreigners) at least 2 days before arrival.
We provide comfortable homestays/hotels in Lachen and Lachung. These are basic but clean accommodations with attached bathrooms and hot water. Due to the remote location, luxury accommodations are not available. Rooms have heating facilities and basic amenities.
Roads in North Sikkim are challenging - narrow, winding mountain roads with steep climbs. The journey from Gangtok to Lachen/Lachung takes 6-7 hours. We use experienced local drivers and 4x4 vehicles suitable for mountain terrain. Journey times may vary due to weather and road conditions.
Pack heavy woolens (even in summer), thermal wear, waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, woolen caps, gloves, mufflers, sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 50+), personal medications, camera, power bank, and valid ID proofs. Include hand sanitizers and wet wipes as facilities are basic.
North Sikkim involves high altitude (up to 17,800 ft) and challenging roads. It's not recommended for infants, elderly with heart/lung conditions, or pregnant women. North Sikkim is the most remote and spectacular region of Sikkim, known for its dramatic landscapes, high-altitude lakes, snow-clad mountains, and unique indigenous cultures. From the sacred Gurudongmar Lake to the breathtaking Yumthang Valley, this region offers an authentic Himalayan adventure.
North Sikkim borders Tibet (China) to the north and northeast. The region features some of the highest motorable roads in the world, leading to Gurudongmar Lake (17,800 ft) and Zero Point (15,300 ft). The Teesta River originates from this region, carving spectacular valleys along its course.
The region is inhabited by the Lachenpas and Lachungpas, indigenous communities with distinct cultures and traditions. These remote villages have preserved their unique way of life, architecture, and festivals, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional Himalayan culture.
Yumthang Valley is known as the "Valley of Flowers," with rhododendrons blooming in various colors during spring. The region is part of the Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to rare species like the red panda, snow leopard, and Himalayan blue sheep.
Gurudongmar Lake is considered sacred by both Buddhists and Sikhs. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) blessed the lake, and Guru Nanak is believed to have visited during his travels. The lake remains partially unfrozen even in extreme winter, considered a divine phenomenon.
North Sikkim offers some of the most adventurous road journeys in India. The region requires special permits and is accessible only through organized tours. The challenging terrain and remote location make it a destination for true adventure seekers looking for off-the-beaten-path experiences.
